Coming in as a major underdog in a contest against state title contender Hodgson Vo-Tech, the Concord Raiders stunned the Silver Eagles with an 8-6 win on Tuesday afternoon at Hodgson.
The game was a low-scoring affair, helped by five quality innings thrown by Robert Edelman for Concord who only allowed three runs. Behind 3-0 in the third inning, Concord’s bats came alive with a two run frame to draw closer at 3-2. In the fourth, Robbie Farnan blasted a two run double to earn a 4-3 lead for the Raiders. Edelman provided the Raiders with an insurance run in the sixth inning after a base hit up the middle to make it 5-3. In the bottom of the sixth, new pitcher Patrick Barker allowed three runs, and Hodgson came storming back to take a 6-5 lead. Concord made the most of their final chance in the last inning, and the Raiders struck with three runs after another big hit from Edelman. To close the deal, Barker pitched a perfect seventh inning to get the Raiders a big win.
“It was a hard fought win,” said big hitter and shortstop Robbie Farnan after the game. “We battled hard and played together as a team well in clutch situations to earn the win.” The Raiders improve to 1-1 for the season.
Concord will look to continue their momentum Thursday against Caesar Rodney.
