Concord Swimming Finishes Season Strong

The Concord boys swim team had a phenomenal showing in the 2016 DIAA State Championships, placing fifth out of 24 competing teams. Leading the team individually was senior Gerasimos Veneris, placing second in both the 100 (47.33) and 200 (1:42.29) yard freestyle events. Senior Nicholas Wanner came in seventh (49.98) in the 100 yard freestyle event alongside Veneris. Other individual contributors were senior Carson Hughes, placing 12th (2:08.49) in the 200 yard individual medley, and freshman Dylan Gaynor, placing 14th (59.07) in the 100 yard backstroke. Concord’s dominant relays placed second in the state in the 200 (1:29.77) and 400 (3:18.23) yard freestyle relays. The 200 yard relay consisted of Veneris, Wanner, Thomas Watras, and Rowan Davis. The 400 yard relay consisted of the same team, but with Hughes swapped for Davis. Concord’s 200 yard medley relay placed 10th (1:46.11). Concord’s fifth place finish (148 points) was behind the champions of the Charter School of Wilmington (294), Salesianum (277), St. Andrews (187), and Conrad (164). Congrats to the boys on a great season!

The Concord girls swim team had a solid showing in the 2016 DIAA State Championships, placing 17th out of 26 teams, with 41 points. Ursuline placed first at the state meet. Individual contributors were senior Emily Ross, who placed eighth (5:34.12) in the 500 yard freestyle event and 10th (1:12.28) in the 100 yard breaststroke, and junior Kaylee Brady with a ninth place finish (55.93) in the 100 yard freestyle. Concord’s relays also contributed valuable points with a 15th place finish (2:02.70) in the 200 yard medley relay, and a 12th place finish (4:02.63) in the 400 yard freestyle relay. The 200 yard medley relay team consisted of Ross, Brady, senior Jordan Woolpert, and freshman Kelsey Wagner. The 400 yard freestyle relay was the same team, swapping Wagner for senior Abigail Spor.
